YouTube Announces New Initiative to Fight Extreme Content

YouTube Announces New Initiative to Fight Extreme Content
Last month, Google took steps to eliminate extremism and content linked to terrorism over the Internet. Today, the company announces a new initiative on YouTube to help guide people away from videos with terrorist content and direct them towards content that is opposed to extremist messages. This is called "redirection" because it redirects users searching for specific YouTube keywords to playlists that display videos that conflict with the content of extremists.

Google's Google-based team is working with Monchot KVi, a company that works with clients to fight "extremism" by developing a redirect. Munshut Kafi was able to conduct extensive research to understand how extremist Internet groups and technology used to spread their messages before knowing what tools they made sense to use to combat this phenomenon on YouTube.

As for how Google plans to measure the effectiveness of its initiative, it simply says that it will consider how content is shared from redirected users. This is not the only way Google fights out extremist messages on YouTube. As part of last month's announcements, she said she was working on increasing the technology she uses to identify extremist and terrorist videos, as well as increasing the number of experts on the Trusted Flagger program on YouTube. This may not be enough to prevent terrorists from using YouTube as a recruiting platform, but it is clear that Google takes the problem seriously.
